Black swallowtail caterpillar host plants are fennel, dill and parsley.
This past June I entered three images in the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) Butterfly of the Year Photo Contest which is held in even number years. Last year I had photographed so many wonderful butterfly and caterpillar images, so I decided to enter this photo contest.
I was thrilled to learn yesterday when I received my digital copy of American Butterflies Magazine in my emails that one of my images entered into the contest was on the cover of the Fall 2022 American Butterflies Magazine issue. The image is of a black swallowtail caterpillar feeding on fennel photographed in my backyard butterfly garden last October 2021.
Although, my caterpillar image was the cover for this Fall 2022 issue of American Butterflies Magazine, my black swallowtail caterpillar was awarded second place in the NABA Photo Contest. I am still elated and happy for my image being on the cover of this national magazine.
Thank you for reading my Field Notes Blog, and I hope you will share this post with others.
